Profile:

(born Feb. 8, 1931, Marion, Indiana, U.S.—died Sept. 30, 1955, near Paso Robles, California) strikingly handsome American motion picture actor enshrined as a symbol of the confused, restless, and idealistic youth of the 1950s.

Dean's family moved from Indiana to California when he was five. Following the death of his mother four years later, Dean returned to Indiana where he was reared on a farm by an aunt and uncle. He moved back to California after high school to study theatre for two years at the University of California at Los Angeles. His first professional acting assignment was for a soft drink commercial, which led to a speaking role as John the Baptist in the television Easter special Hill Number One (1951). He played bit parts in three Hollywood films—Sailor Beware (1951), Fixed Bayonets (1951), and Has Anybody Seen My Gal? (1952)—before moving to New York City on the advice of actor James Whitmore, with whom he had briefly studied. After a series of short-term jobs, including a brief period as a “stunt tester” for the CBS game show Beat the Clock, he was cast in a key role in the Broadway flop See the Jaguar (1953). More successful was his sly, insinuating performance as a blackmailing homosexual houseboy in another Broadway production, The Immoralist (1954), a stage adaptation of AndrĂ© Gide's book.

THE AVENGERS on Entertainment Weekly cover | Exclusive first-look plus character portraits!!!

The whole enterprise is falling apart. Egos, tempers, uneasy alliances and bad attitudes are threatening the group, and failure would be catastrophic. Luckily, we’re talking about the actual team of superheroes in the Marvel Studios movie The Avengers, not the cast and crew. In this week’s issue, EW takes a deep dive into the May 4, 2012 movie that will finally unite Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and Chris Evans’ Captain America — along with Mark Ruffalo’s The Incredible Hulk, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow — on the big screen. We use the word “unite” loosely. “Just because they’re super heroes doesn’t mean they’re super friends,” says Renner.

It was a different story with the cast and crew: If anything, they got along too well. Far from home on the Albuquerque set, they had little to do except hang out together, maybe hit a Motley CruĂ« concert, or go dancing with writer-director Joss Whedon, who says he knew “every dance club in Albuquerque.” Whedon was actually counting on a little bit of friction, since there’s so much in the actual story. “I was like, well, if they hate each other, I guess we can use that,” he shrugs. “But they don’t.”

When he wasn’t out dancing, Whedon was obsessively rewriting dialogue. On the Iron Manmovies, Downey was notorious for pushing for heat-of-the-moment script punch-ups (or as he puts it: “I dominated like a rabid, horny gorilla”). And even as part of an ensemble in Avengers, he still nudged Whedon to go a little farther in some scenes. The day EW was on set, Whedon (the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the acclaimed Astonishing X-Mencomic book series) was scribbling out new pages of dialogue right before our eyes. Says the director, “There is a weird element of: they handed me one of the biggest movies of all time, and I’m making it up as I go.”

T-Mobile joins Verizon to block Apple injunction against Samsung

With Apple's battle against Samsung heating up, T-Mobile is doing its best not to get burned. If Apple is successful in getting a preliminary injunction against Samsung, the nation's fourth biggest carrier could find itself in a bad spot. Verizon has iPhone to fall back on. T-Mobile mostly offers Android smartphones, and Samsung makes the flagship models.

On Wednesday, T-Mobile filed a legal brief with the United District Court for the Northern District of California asking a federal judge to reject Apple's request for preliminary injunction against four Samsung devices: Droid Charge, Galaxy S 4G, Infuse 4G and Galaxy Tab 10.1. A hearing is scheduled for October 13. If granted, Samsung would be barred from offering these Android devices in the United States.

T-Mobile would be affected by the injunction on only one of the four devices named: it currently sells the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It will also sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 too, so the nation's fourth biggest carrier has a vested interest in ensuring this injunction isn't imposed.

All in all, T-Mobile's filing seems like an effort to protect itself more than any action intended to shoot back at Apple for its failure to work with the carrier. After all, T-Mobile's chief marketing officer on Monday publicly stated the company's interest in the iPhone, and said it had expressed that to the folks in Cupertino.

Its parent company is also a major partner internationally for Apple, and nearly every other T-Mobile division has the iPhone in their lineup.

T-Mobile's brief generally argues the same points as another filed by Verizon. It argues that an injunction would "unnecessarily harm" the carrier and its customers, and in the case of the Galaxy Tab they would have no replacement.

"These investments cannot be recouped easily," the filing states.

Sneak Peek | “WAR HORSE” poster

DreamWorks Pictures has just revealed the first poster of Steven Spielberg’s new epic adventure “War Horse,” a tale of loyalty, hope and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War.

“War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. iPhone 5 | Here’s What It Might Look Like

iPhone Evolution
Polish students designed this beauty, going with the curved back look. Found on VeteranGeek.

What will the iPhone 5 look like? Outside of a certain office complex in Cupertino and a few other secret places around the world, nobody knows the exact answer to that, but many are willing to guess.

Here’s a gallery that shows the top 10 attempts at predicting the future — some educated guesses based on leaks, others wild yet beautiful stabs in the dark, and still others just wishful thinking. The truth must lie somewhere within. Will it have a rounded back like the iPad 2? Will its sides be squared off, will its cross section be teardrop-shaped, are those leaked case designs indicative of the iPhone 5′s final design?

Of course, all these questions and more will be answered on October 4 when the new iPhones are revealed, but until then, let’s take a look at this gallery of dreams, speculations, rumors and hearsay, putting it all together into an impression of what we might be seeing at the big rollout next month.

Dolphin WINTER plays herself in family adventure “DOLPHIN TALE”

A heartwarming, fun adventure about the healing bonds of family, both human and animal, Warner Bros.' “Dolphin Tale” introduces the screen's cutest, most adorable mammal star yet – the dolphin Winter.

In the film based on real events, a young dolphin is caught in a crab trap, severely damaging her tail. She is rescued and transported to the Clearwater Marine Hospital, where she is named Winter. But her fight for survival has just begun. It will take the expertise of a dedicated marine biologist, the ingenuity of a brilliant prosthetics doctor, and the unwavering devotion of a young boy to bring about a groundbreaking miracle.

Playing the title role—as only she could—is Winter herself. Director Charles Martin Smith recounts, “When we were prepping, there was the obvious question of how to depict Winter. Because of the distinctive side-to-side wiggle that she developed to swim, which is also integral to the story, the best solution was to use the real Winter. The results were above and beyond our expectations.”

Before Winter could make her film debut, the production needed the cooperation of her real-life “family” at Clearwater Marine Aquarium or CMA, which came with certain ground rules. The CEO of the Aquarium, David Yates, confirms, “I had many conversations with Charles and the producers because, first and foremost, I had to protect Winter; we wanted it to be a positive experience for her. They also had to understand who we are and what we’re about because they were pretty much going to be dropping into the middle of our operations, and we had to make sure we didn’t, in any way, put any of our animals at risk. From day one, they all said, ‘This is your call; whatever you say is how it’s going to be done.’ It turned out to be a fantastic partnership.”

Protecting Winter, as well as the other animals who call CMA home, was also imperative to the filmmakers. Producer Broderick Johnson attests, “In certain scenes, we incorporated some CGI and animatronics because Winter’s safety came first. But, whenever possible, what you’re seeing is her because the true essence of this amazing animal could only be conveyed by Winter herself.”

The filmmakers made another important decision to better capture Winter’s habitat on the screen. Says Smith, “There are two environments in this movie: one on land and another underwater. I wanted a way to pull people into that second world, so we decided to shoot the film in 3D. In the opening sequence, where we meet Winter swimming free in the ocean with her pod, it gives you the sense of gliding through the water with the dolphins. The ability to share that with audiences was the main benefit of 3D. And I tried to recreate that feeling later in the movie, when Sawyer swims with Winter.”

Producer Andrew Kosove concludes, “I think one of the best things about this film is that moviegoers can meet and fall in love with Winter, as we all did.”

Without exception, the human cast of “Dolphin Tale” did fall in love with their aquatic co-star. “I was looking forward to getting to work with Winter,” Morgan Freeman says. “I know she’s the real star of the movie, so I just tried to ingratiate myself,” he laughs.

Opening across the Philippines on Oct. 5 in 3D and regular theaters, “Dolphin Tale” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

TORI AMOS | Very 1st classically inspired album "Night of Hunters" features single 'Carry'

Night of Hunters is the 12th solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Tori Amos, released on September 20, 2011, in the United States, through the eminent German label, Deutsche Grammophon. It is a concept album that Amos has described as "a 21st century song cycle inspired by classical music themes spanning over 400 years." She uses the musical tradition of variations on a theme to pay tribute to such renowned composers as Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Granados, Satie and Schubert, while taking inspiration from their original compositions to create a new, independent work. Regarding the album's concept, she has described it as the exploration of "the hunter and the hunted and how both exist within us "through the story of "a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship."

Night of Hunters is Amos' first studio album recorded entirely through the use of both acoustic means and instruments, relying solely on her vocals and classically trained piano skills, along with a variety of accompanying string and woodwind instruments, to create its classical sound. Additionally, to record this album Amos has broken a nearly 15-year-long collaboration with her studio and touring bandmates, choosing to work with a variety of new musicians, including the Berlin Philharmonic's principal clarinetist, Andreas Ottensamer, and the award-winning string quartet, Apollon Musagète, while enlisting her daughter, Natashya Hawley, and niece, Kelsey Dobyns, as guest vocalists. Night of Hunters also marks the twentieth anniversary of her long-time collaboration with John Philip Shenale, who has contributed arrangements to most of her albums, beginning with her solo debut, Little Earthquakes(1992).

The album is Amos' first release on a classical music label. Like her previous releases, it is available in both standard and deluxe CD formats, digital format, as well as limited edition vinyl.

Here's the video. Enjoy!

Apple will announce one iPhone, not two, on Oct. 4th

Patient (or impatient) iPhone aficionados will not have to wait much longer for that highly anticipated iPhone 5: Apple on Tuesday began mailing out invitations to journalists for an iPhone event on October 4, to be held at its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. Apple often drops hints in the graphic elements accompanying the invites about what's coming. The not-so-cryptic message: One iPhone will be coming, contradicting weeks of rumors about two -- the other being the so-called 4S.

It's not clear why Apple chose to have its event on-campus this time versus its typical launch venue, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The YBCA is showing no events for that day. In any case, Apple may be leaning towards a more intimate setting, hoping to maximize press coverage for the device by only inviting the most highly-read news outlets to the event itself.

The invitation is simply titled "Let's Talk iPhone," with an image showing the iOS icons for its calendar, showing the date of Tuesday the 4th, the clock, (showing the time of the event), the Map icon showing a pin where Apple's campus is located, and the phone icon.

If the visual clues extend to the phone icon, this may be the most important part of the whole invite. Notice that the "1" badge is on this image. For several months now, we've waffled between Apple releasing either one or two phones. In true Apple style, the company may have hidden its answer in the invitation itself. Those sneaky devils.

What is still unclear regardless of the number of phones Apple debuts next Tuesday is the release date. Using the iPhone 4 as a baseline for speculation, the announcement came on June 7, 2010, followed by preorders on June 16 (Wednesday) and in-store sales on June 24 (Thursday).

By that reckoning, presales would start October 12 and the phone would be in stores on October 21. But a more ambitious schedule would better rumors of October 15. In that scenario, Apple would begin presales on October 5 and have iPhone 5 in stores on the 13th.

Meet the bad guys from “30 MINUTES OR LESS”

Playing the bad guys in Columbia Pictures’ quirky comedy “30 Minutes or Less” are comic actors Danny McBride and Nick Swardson as a couple of guys who think they’re just one great idea away from living the good life.

Directed by “Zombieland’s” Ruben Fleischer, “30 Minutes or Less” revolves around Nick (Jesse Eisenberg), a small town pizza delivery guy whose mundane life collides with the big plans of two wannabe criminal masterminds, Dwayne and Travis (McBride and Swardson). The lowlifes kidnap Nick and strap a time bomb to him – with the promise that they’ll blow him up unless he robs a bank. With only a few hours to pull off the impossible task, Nick enlists the help of his ex-best friend, Chet (Aziz Ansari). As the clock ticks, the two must deal with the police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their own tumultuous relationship.

The screenwriters wrote the role of Dwayne with Danny McBride in mind. Dwayne is a complete heel, and the plan he sets in motion is as doomed to failure as it is half-baked and completely inane – but still, it was important to the filmmakers that the audience be able to connect with the character. In writing the role to be played by McBride, Jesse Eisenberg says, the screenwriters were able to take advantage of the unique qualities he brings to his roles. “Danny has a unique way of being intimidating and terrible but also sweet and endearing and funny,” says Eisenberg. “That’s especially important for this movie, because his character isn’t just a villain, he has an arc and his own story line and you almost root for him at certain points. Almost.”

“Danny feels absolutely no need to have his character liked by the audience on any level – he’s not looking for their approval,” says producer Stuart Cornfeld. “But as far as I’m concerned, because of that, it just makes me love his character that much more.”

Fortunately, McBride wanted to play the part, and further, he was enticed by Fleischer’s vision for the film. “I loved `Zombieland,’ so when I heard he was interested in me for this film, I was flattered and thrilled and wanted to see what he would do with this movie,” he says. “Everything in it, from the comedy to the chases to the action, seemed like something that would be right for him to bite into.”

McBride was able to see what makes his character tick. “We all have been or know someone that has been desperate at some time in their life. He’s kind of like a younger, more extreme, desperate version of me,” he says.

For part of the movie, Dwayne is in disguise as he and Travis wear monkey masks. There’s a certain upside to it, he says. “You don’t have to go through hair and makeup. You don’t get touch-ups. You just put the mask on and you wave your hands around. It’s nice.”

Dwayne’s partner in crime is Travis, played by Nick Swardson. “Travis idolizes Dwayne, and because of that, he’s at Dwayne’s mercy,” says Swardson. “It’s great playing a bad guy. We’re not evil or anything – just incredibly misguided. It’s fun to play, even if you have to wear an unfortunate mustache.”

“Dwayne is definitely the lead dog of the pack of two,” says McBride. “Travis is a very loyal, smart, and inventive follower.”

Playing the role, Swardson says, it was important to keep their relationship in mind. “I would see Danny’s choices, and I’d know that Travis would copy him, go off of whatever Dwayne was like,” he says. “Travis is very timid – I can remember what that’s like, because I was timid as a little kid, and I had bigger friends that I idolized. I used that vibe with Travis. Danny helped a lot.”

GIANFRANCO FERRE | Spring/Summer 2012 Ready-To-Wear 'Milan'

Show Report

It’s not been plain sailing over at the house of Gianfranco FerrĂ© of late – in February of this year it got itself a new owner in the shape of the Dubai-based Paris Group and in April its creative directors, Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi, were reportedly asked to leave. And last season’s money-is-no-object attitude in terms of their woman’s wardrobe might well have been the issue.

So today it was a new start, wiping the fashion slate clean and showing a collection designed by Stefano Citron and Federico Piaggi. And it was a sentiment they certainly wanted us to understand, noting “a new image”, “a free, sensual, determined woman” among the key points of the collection - which was most certainly futuristic and optimistic in its outlook. Think minimalist, think riffs on things you think you know but then a sleeve is missing and in its place judo sculpted detailing and you do indeed find yourself surprised.
