Harper's Bazaar Best-Dressed Llist | July 15th, 2011

Emma Watson in Oscar de la Renta and Antonio Berardi

Granted, I’m not as upset as the crowds of teenagers flanking the barricades at the Harry Potter premieres in London and New York, but I’m still a little saddened to see the famous wizard’s story come to an end. (My reason is a little more peculiar, however; I’ll miss the red-carpet appearances.) Emma Watson, who we’ve seen grow up as Hermione Granger on film and off, didn’t miss a beat with her premiere choices. My favorite? The Oscar de la Renta gown she wore to the London premiere. She looks like she’s floating on a cloud, and she might be, now that her first film gig — which lasted, oh, about a dozen years — has finally wrapped.

Nicole Kidman in Elie Saab

Ah, here’s some vintage Nicole Kidman! Doesn’t this picture remind you of the fabulous days of late 1990s Kidman, just when she started to come out of her then-husband’s shadow and assert herself as the actress and — more important — the style icon we’ve come to appreciate? The perfectly coiffed locks and the beautiful tailored red dress? She looks classically, wonderfully divine.

Kate Winslet in Ralph Lauren

Kate Winslet is one of those girls that I think should only wear evening dresses — at all times. Here she is, in a Ralph Lauren sheath, in Beijing, one of China’s most bustling metropolises, looking like she just stepped out of an old-Hollywood film. She is every inch the movie star.

Jen Brill in Christopher Kane and Chanel

Jen Brill is a fashion girl after my own heart. She’s the sort of stylish sweetie who’s not going to let a little something like a summer heat wave make her change her plans. She liked that yellow laser-cut Christopher Kane leather skirt, and she was going to wear it, no matter what. Well, she looked fabulous, especially after pairing it with a cute crocheted Chanel sweater.

Zoë Saldana in Chloé

While I’m partial to some of the city looks this week, I can’t ignore the fabulous Chloé dress Zoë Saldana wore to a polo match in California. (Kudos to my fellow Americans for taking some of the English polo glitz to the West Coast!) While I’ve seen my fair share of English birds frolicking around polo matches on the other side of the pond, I love the way Zoë looks. She has the light, floral feel typical of a polo pitch and the glamour and star wattage we’re used to seeing in Southern California.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in The Row

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s ascent in the fashion business isn’t news. They’ve been setting trends since they were tweenagers. But when I saw this picture of the duo at the launch of their handbag line at Barneys, I was impressed with how perfectly tressed they were. To me, nothing says summer like pastels, prints, and a perfect blonde.

Amanda Brooks in New York

While my mantra for years has been “Leopard print is my favorite color,” I’ve always had a fondness for polka dots. That’s why I was instantly drawn to the long, loose trousers Barneys’ Amanda Brooks wore at a cocktail party for the new handbag collection from The Row; it’s quintessential city glamour. And in an overly air-conditioned town like New York, snaps for the sweater too.

Coco Sumner in Italy

Just when I was starting to romanticize summertime with floaty florals and pretty pastels, this picture of Coco Sumner pounding the streets at a musical festival crossed my desk. Androgyny isn’t seasonal, and I’ve always been a fan of how original Coco’s look is. She’s never shied away from masculine tailoring and rock ’n’ roll edge, which can be just as fabulous in the city during the summer.

Hilary Rhoda in Helmut Lang

A white suit has long been a strong look in fashion history (Bianca Jagger, anyone?), so when I saw Hilary Rhoda sauntering around a party in the Hamptons in this well-cut jacket and cropped trouser — both from Helmet Lang — I thought it was the perfect blend of summer whites and city tailoring. And not to call her out, but I’m also very partial to this look because Hilary wore it earlier this year at my surprise birthday party.

Kate Moss in London

Most brides immediately following their wedding still have that newlywed glow. Kate Moss isn’t most brides (the stories from her wedding are just coming out now, and it seems everyone had a pretty good time), but even the queen of cool — even when she’s wearing a metallic miniskirt more suited to a rock club than a church — still exudes an aura of marital bliss. She looks divine, and even though she’s probably heard it a few times by now, congratulations on your wedding, Mrs. Hince.
