Sergio Mendes’ "Bom Tempo" - A Celebration Of Life

Legendary Brazilian Musician Returns May 2010
With Stunning New Collection on MCA Music

Sergio Mendes, producer, composer, arranger pianist, band leader and cultural sage, continues his magical ride with Bom Tempo, a beautiful slice of rhythmically fresh inspiration from the internationally celebrated artist. He remains as vibrant and vital today as he was when leading Brasil ’66 to international superstardom. Mendes’ modern sensibilities and ultra sensitivity to the intricate and beautiful Brazilian musical language he himself helped create has always been his focus. Bom Tempo expands the maestro’s use of color, texture and street derived energy, highlighting his mastery of authentic Brazilian rhythms and composition. In the end, Bom Tempo is a brilliant summer day celebration.

“This is bom tempo music, good times music,” says the Brazilian-born, U.S.-based Mendes, who sought to sum up the CD with a succinct Portuguese title. “It’s all about the good times, good weather, good tempos. The album is about the diversity, joy and sensuality of Brazilian music—songs I previously recorded and some that I never have—played by Brazilian and American musicians.”

Bom Tempo showcases songs from the crème de la crème of Brazilian songwriters (including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Joao Donato, Carlinhos Brown, Jorge Benjor, Milton Nascimento and Moacir Santos) and a song from his old friend Stevie Wonder, written especially for Mendes in 1977, the simmering “The Real Thing” (first recorded on Sergio Mendes and the New Brasil '77 album). While many of Mendes’ friends and long time collaborators are present on the album (including drummers Mike Shapiro and Vinnie Colaiuta, bassists Nathan Watts and Alphonso Johnson, guitarists Paul Jackson Jr. and Kleber Jorge, percussionist Gibi, vocalist Gracinha Leporace—the bandleader’s wife—and songwriter-arranger-vocalist Carlinhos Brown, who was integral to the success of the Brasileiro album), newcomers are also in the mix.

Most prominent is Milton Nascimento, who contributes his own “Caxanga,” a moody, mysterious children’s song that he had only recorded once. He sings the lead vocal in his singular style and plays the acoustic guitar. Other standout musicians include Seu Jorge, one of Brazil’s most promising singers, who is featured on two songs—“Maracatu Atomico” and “Maracatu Nation of Love”; young and talented singers Katie Hampton and Nayanna Holley and the brilliant horn section of Andrew Lippman and Bill Churchville all beautifully arranged by their colleague Scott Mayo. Prominent guitarist Jack Majdecki joined Mendes on this latest project as did gifted, versatile Brazilian rhythm designer, musician Mika Mutti.

Bom Tempo opens with a spirited, chant-like take on the Gil/Donato song “Emorio,” featuring Holley and Brown on lead vocals. The latter contributes a funky rap that pays tribute to Brazil’s songwriters. In the Afro-Brazilian mix are allusions to such Mendes’ hits as “Mas Que Nada” and “The Frog.” The second track, another dance-oriented jewel, “Maracatu Atomico,” was a first-time rendering, complete with a great horn section and percussive beat, based on the Afro-Brazilian maracatu rhythm. Another song on the CD with the rhythm, “Maracatu (Nation of Love)” is a samba-infused beauty, featuring a gorgeous Jorge/Leporace conversation-like duet and luminous horns.

Bom Tempo features new interpretations of some Brazilian classics, including a fresh spin on “Ye-Me-Le”, with a cool rap performed by new band member H2O and a remake of “Magalenha” (from the Grammy-winning Brasileiro album) that features great steel guitar, rap and body percussion contributions from Brown. Says Mendes: “Carlinhos was in Los Angeles for two weeks, so we decided to work on a new, special version of the song he wrote. I said, let’s do a 2010 version that not only exhibits great Brazilian music but also pays tribute to the World Cup games this year. Because those soccer games will be played in Cape Town, South Africa, I had the idea of using some Zulu words as part of the song.”

Proud of his Brazilian heritage and aware of the magic and seduction of his homeland’s music, Mendes notes, “It started with Jobim, being played by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd with Astrud and Joao Gilberto; then it was myself with Cannonball Adderley; Ron Carter, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald recording with Jobim, and later David Byrne putting those compilation albums of a variety of Brazilian musicians playing all kinds of styles. He adds, “More recently (with Timeless and Morning In Rio) the attraction continues, with will.i.am , John Legend, India.Arie, Fergie, and so many more, who love the music so much and were instrumental in helping to expose it to people in their audience. Even for Bom Tempo, when I met the 20-year-old DJ guys Bimbo Jones in London, they were totally into watching YouTube videos of Brasil ’66. It just goes to show you that Brazilian music has a universal appeal and it IS timeless… ” And so is Sergio Mendes.

CRAIG DAVID: SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED (New album for 2010)

R&B star Craig David returns with a new single and album deal with MCA Music (A Universal Music Group company). His first single, is One More Lie (Standing In The Shadows), taken from his fifth studio album Signed Sealed Delivered released later on the March 2010.
The album is a collection of some of the great soul hits including For Once In My Life, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, I Heard It Through The Grapevine and the title track by Stevie Wonder, reworked in Craig's own style. The single, his first since 2008, takes a sample from the classic Four Tops hit (first released in 1966) and gives it a modern flavour.

From a UK Garage pioneer to a mainstream multi-million seller, Craig David is so much more than your average artist. The Southampton born singer is a truly exceptional individual who transcends the norm, consistently outdoes expectation and continues to push musical boundaries. Still only 27-years old, it’s incredible to consider what he’s achieved during his ten year career. From Ivor Novello awards to sales of over 13 million, 2 No.1’s, 13 Top 10 hits, huge success in America and sold out shows across the world, Craig is one of the music scene’s most successful male solo performers. As well as awards, acclaim, platinum sales and sold-out tours, the singer/songwriter is one of a handful of artists able to balance incredible commercial success with can’t-pay-for-it credibility.

His brand new album, Signed Sealed Delivered asserts once more why Craig is such a significant artist. Covering a multitude of Motown classics, Craig’s fifth studio offering retains his innovative approach to music-making. Favourites from Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops and The Temptations are all given a 2010 twist; the first single One More Lie (Standing In The Shadows) is an upbeat floor-filler, featuring hardknock drums and a new level of vocal from Craig, as he takes it to the top-end. Indeed, his voice is the centerpiece of the entire album, asserting his presence as a powerful pop vocalist. “I felt like, if I’m going to sing a Stevie song, I have to do it justice, so I approached it differently,” says Craig of recording the record. “Even if my voice broke hitting those notes, even if it was out of my comfort zone, I put my all in. I wanted this record to feel the same as when I made my first album; the songs had to pop out of the speakers. As soon as I started to feel that, I knew I was onto a winner.”

Unaware that Motown meant all songs recorded on the eponymous label, Craig also picked out a Curtis Steigers classic, I Wonder Why. “My manager had to sit me down and explain Motown’s history,” he laughs. “But I love that track so much, so we decided to keep it regardless.” Featuring eleven Motown songs and one Steigers, Signed Sealed Delivered also covers For Once In My Life, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, I Heard It Through The Grapevine and, of course, the title track by Stevie. Stuffed with soul, synths, powerful melodies and razor-sharp riffs, the album reflects Craig’s young age while tipping more than a large nod to the masters of music.

Signed Sealed Delivered, does exactly what is says on the proverbial tin. He’s already achieved so much more than most, but for Craig David the story continues. “I haven’t lost the excitement or the love; in fact if anything, I’m more inspired than ever.”

Signed Sealed Delivered available March 2010, only from MCA Music.

Jamie Cullum: The Pursuit

“Always either on a peak of happiness or drowning in black waters of despair they loved or they loathed, they lived in a world of superlatives.”
Nancy Mitford, The Pursuit Of Love

Jamie Cullum releases his eagerly awaited fifth album entitled “The Pursuit”. This, his first solo album in four years, is a combination of his eclectic music tastes and enduring love of Jazz and its timeless standards. “In life, we pursue everything. Life is one long pursuit,” says Jamie.

“The Pursuit” is a record that mixes his heritage with a thrilling selection of modern influences. Describing its sound he moves from Cole Porter to Rihanna to Aphex Twin in the same sentence. Jamie is a performer capable of delivering constant surprises with a talent elastic enough to evince a four-to-the-floor acoustic Ibiza song on the same record as a lushly recorded Jazz standard.

The making of the album was a marathon not a sprint. Having decided to take time off after two years touring 2005's ‘Catching Tales‘ and the juggernaut of praise and press that followed the previous album 2003's ‘Twentysomething’, Jamie turned to other projects. “I took a whole year off,” he says, “I played in other people’s bands and worked with other artists, I Dj’d, made dance music with my brother and travelled.” He also found time to build his own studio, Terrified Studios, in London's Shepherd's Bush – “I call it that because I am so unknowledgeable about technology that I'm usually terrified when I'm in there,” laughs Jamie.

All the songs on ‘The Pursuit’ began life at Terrified Studios and in Jamie's kitchen before recording moved to Los Angeles for three months over the summer of 2008. While work there with producer and long-time associate Greg Wells proved productive, some of the work from Jamie's kitchen made it to the final product. “We realised there were some things we couldn't recreate in any studio,” Jamie reveals, “There's a Rhodes solo on a song called “We Run Things” which I played on two different organs in LA but in the end we used the performance I recorded in my little kitchen in London!”

Recording in LA meant changing the techniques and routines Jamie had developed on his previous records. “I didn't want to make this album with my old band or my old producer,” he says, “I needed to frighten myself.” While many of the songs were put together by Greg and Jamie in the studio, a selection of stellar talent contributed their musicianship. Members of Beck's band joined the sessions while the horn section that featured on Michael Jackson's Thriller also appear. “Getting out of your comfort zone is such a cliché for your third or fourth album,” Jamie says sincerely, “But, you know, it really worked.”

“I had more songs and new experiences to draw upon,” says Jamie, “I'd been doing the Rihanna cover and thought, actually I really want this on my album.” Covers have always been part of Jamie's DNA as a Jazz musician , and after previously covering Rhianna's all conquering uber-single “Umbrella”, it’s ubiquity led Jamie to choose another of the r'n'b poppet's tunes – “Please Don't Stop The Music”.

“I wanted to reference more of my contemporary musical influences,” says Jamie. While his crate-digging, band-discovering love of music has been present all along, The Pursuit is the first record where he has allowed these impulses full reign. “People who have seen me play live and read things I've written will already know that I've got a very eclectic taste,” he says, “But the average person will just think of “What A Difference A Day Makes”. I've never had a problem with that though. Singing a song like that and doing it well is one of the hardest things you can do.”

Ten years on from his first self-funded release, Heard It All Before, Jamie is still (here's that theme again) pursuing new sounds and new ideas in his music. “We've had a lot of musicians who've arrived fully formed recently like Alex Turner or Jamie T. They knew what they wanted to sound like and said it straight away. When I made my first record it was a stab in the dark, something to sell at my wedding gigs.”

Though he says he lived his “twenties to the fullest”, in recent years the up-and-downs of his personal and professional life have fuelled an even more powerful creative drive. His personal happiness (exhaustively and often inaccurately documented by the tabloids) is at the heart of one of the album's most important songs – ‘Love Ain't Gonna Let You Down’. “I've never written a love song that didn't have a joke in it before,” Jamie admits, “The only pure love songs I'd sung before that were by George Gershwin.”

‘Love Ain't Gonna Let You Down’ is also the song that ties up the album's over-arching theme in the lyric “the pursuit of love consumes us all”. But for Jamie, the love he documents is not just the romantic one that obsesses the red tops but a love of music that shines out from every track. The Pursuit is an album that starts with a track featuring the Count Basie Orchestra recorded live at Tony Bennett's studio in New York and ends with a dance track and a jazz standard combined with trip-hop beats.

Despite possessing a talent that has seen him pursued for collaborations by Carole King, Burt Bacharach and Clint Eastwood as well as beat-boxer extraordinare Killa Kella and hip-hop big hitter Pharrell, Jamie is still far more interested in writing songs than seeking acclaim. “When you concentrate on making music, the whole point is that you never stop and are always trying to move on. Unless you're P-Diddy I guess,” Jamie laughs. “The only thing I have to live up to is making an album that I'm proud of.” On the strength of this astounding record, that's yet another pursuit he's succeeded in. The tracklisting is as follows:

Just One Of Those Things
I'm All Over It
Wheels
If I Ruled The World
You And Me Are Gone
Don’t Stop The Music
Love Ain't Gonna Let You Down
Mixtape
I Think, I Love
We Run Things
Not While I'm Around
Music Is Through

The Pursuit features the single I'm All Over It, fan's favourite Wheels, a version of Cole Porter's Just One Of Those Things, a stunning version of If I Ruled The World and an explosive version of Rihanna's Don't Stop The Music. The Pursuit is available in record stores, released by MCA Music.

ROLANDO PERMANGIL: A memorable audition in Pilipinas' Got Talent

>Once again, Pilipinas Got Talent showcases amazing talents. Not only beautiful or physically attractive individuals, but also those that are most times taken for granted or worst ignored. I was so moved with this audition. Ronaldo Permangil, a father of 3 who grew up singing for money on the streets. A humble simple man with humble looks. Most will not even take a second look at him, but I think after this audition.... millions will respect him.

Abandoned by his wife, no word, no nothing. He sings his heart out in a beautiful and tear jerking version of Martin Nievera's "Ikaw And Aking Pangarap" (You Are My Dream). I was moved to tears and cannot help but wish that we will stop looking at looks or anything physical but appreciate people for the beautiful things that they teach and share. And not only is this man an inspiration for musicians, but a great father and son as well.

I am sharing this for the world to see. And I hope through this blog of mine, I am able to share "beauty" that most people do not see.

Francis Kong: Inspiring Excellence "THE COOLEST GUARD"

Sharing a Francis Kong blog. :o)

How important is your customer to you?

Being able to create a customer is great but retaining the customer is more important! Treat your customers right because your customers are important if you view them for their lifetime purchasing power. Stanley Marcus's father, the founder of Neiman-Marcus, gave Stanley some valuable advice early in his career. It was advice that later helped build Neiman-Marcus into a first-class store. A woman ruined a dress she had worn just once and wanted her money back. His father told him to give the woman her money back, and Stanley argued that they shouldn't do it since the woman had obviously abused the dress. Stanley continued to press his point since the manufacturer wasn't going to help pay for it. His father reminded him that the woman wasn't doing business with the manufacturer; she was doing business with Neiman's. His father told him that it didn't matter if it cost $200 to get a customer, and he didn't want to lose her over a $175 dress. He also told Stanley to refund the money with a smile. During the years, the woman spent over $500,000 at Neiman-Marcus. This is an old story and it works in the context of honest customers. And then of course the department store in this case caters to the very upscale market. The point however is that every effort should be made to not just create customer satisfaction but to create customer loyalty.

A grocery store clerk, tired of his job, quit to become a traffic policeman. After a few days, a friend asked him how he liked his new job. He said, "The pay and hours aren't too good, but at least the customer is always wrong." Of course the customer is not always right all the time but it is not our job to prove them wrong, it is your job and mine to serve our customers well. When it comes to investments you listen to the advice of Warren Buffet. When it comes to retail you listen to Walmart founder Sam Walton. The late Sam Walton many years ago said something that still rings strong and true today. He says: “The customer is our employer. There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money some- where else."

More than 1,200 people attended the seminar I gave entitled “Developing Culture of Personal Excellence held in SMX Convention Center last March 3. I touched briefly on excellent customer service and featured an exceptional person who personifies this. Now let me tell you his story. As I was training a lot of bank executives on customer service, this 46-year-old security guard’s name keeps popping up. I got curious. I probed. Edduardo Boy Fleras has been given so many commendations he has lost count. He’s been interviewed by students, filmed by jocks and his interviews have been posted in You Tube. Eddie Boy Fleras is your friendly neighborhood security guard assigned to McDonald’s El Pueblo and he is the perfect example of someone who knows how to extend excellent customer service. I asked company boss Ken Young for permission, he said yes. I visited the branch but Mr. Fleras was on leave but I got his number and interviewed him. Fleras says he loves his job. His most important duty is to provide safety for the customers as well as for the company’s properties but would not hesitate to get water for weary customers, help clean tables and do anything and everything in order to provide a good service experience everyone who enters the restaurant. I asked him a simple question: “But why are you doing this when you don’t have to?” Fleras thought for a while and then said, “Serving people from the heart makes me happy. I want people to trust me and even though I work 12 hours every day I go home happy.” Talk about job descriptions it is apparent that Fleras do not believe in it. After a couple more questions Fleras said something that really impressed me. “Although I stand by the door of McDonald’s as a security guard, that place where I stand is my stage and I want to give a great performance every time and every day.” Fleras has a family. His wife works too, his eldest daughter is a teacher and his youngest daughter is now working for BDO. Eddie Boy Fleras simply confirmed what I have been claiming all along. “It’s not the position of the job that is important. Its’ the nobility you put into your job that is.” The best way to give good customer service is to hire people who are service-conscious. It follows the Scriptural principle of loving your neighbors as yourself.

Now here’s a beautiful twist to the story. As I was working on this article, Fleras called me. He said, “Sir, I just wanted to let you know that there were so many people who attended your seminar who came just to shake my hands, thank me and tell me how I am doing a great job. This makes me so happy.” You know what? This makes me happy too. That people are more than happy and willing to recognize and acknowledge exceptional customer service. And did I mention that it’s actually good for business too?

Love Never Dies continues the story of ‘The Phantom’, who has moved from his lair in the Paris Opera House to haunt the fairgrounds of Coney Island, far across the Atlantic. Set 10 years after the mysterious disappearance of The Phantom from Paris, this show is a rollercoaster ride of obsession and intrigue, in which music and memory can play cruel tricks...and The Phantom sets out to prove that, indeed, Love Never Dies.

Til I Hear You Sing and Love Never Dies will be the first songs to be heard ahead of opening night.

‘Til I Hear You Sing is an epic, soaring ballad sung by The Phantom who will be played by Ramin Karimloo. Ramin has already played the role to great acclaim in The Phantom of the Opera in London and his other stage credits include starring as ‘Enjolras’ in Les Misérables in the West End, ‘Chris’ in the UK tour of Miss Saigon and ‘Artie Green’ in the UK tour of Sunset Boulevard. Ramin also played ‘Raoul’ in the West End production of The Phantom of the Opera, as well as the role of ‘Christine’s Father’ in Joel Schumacher’s film, making him the only actor to play all three of ‘Christine’s’ loves.

The title track, Love Never Dies will be performed by Sierra Boggess in the role of the lovelorn Christine Daae. Following successful roles across a range of musicals, including Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular the incredibly talented Sierra was handpicked by Andrew Lloyd Webber having most recently played the title role in the Broadway production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

CD Review: TIAGO IORC "Let Yourself In"

Originally from Brazil, Tiago is said to have lived in both England and the United States. Hence, the album if heard for the first time can easily be mistaken as an American act. Commercial, accessible, somewhat easily mistaken as another artist, but offers new and interesting music.

There are hints of Jason Mraz especially in the song “Fine” and John Mayer in “Nothing But A Song”, but at 22, this lad proves that his song writing skills are of value especially that he delivers songs that are relevant and current. A mistake most artists do in their crusade to promote “artists” music as they dub it. Yes, there is room to practice artistry and show what an artist is really made of, or boast of one’s roots and how deep their repertoire and appreciation is. But record companies need their investments back. And as tacky as that sounds, that is the only way for the industry to survive. To continue producing acts that are willing to deliver 99 percent of what the market is asking for. The 1 percent left to their artistry. And it seems, this young man is well guided.

It is always a worry when an artist touches a masterpiece – like “Ticket To Ride”. Touching a John Lennon composition especially is not an easy task. In some corner of the globe, I am sure someone is bitching about Tiago’s version. But as far as my ear is concerned, this is a great version! Light, airy, current and pleasant. He has given it a new appeal that can help introduce the young generation to the iconic group that has inspired millions. Yes, it sounds preachy but at certain points , an artist has to come forward and remind the new “groupies” of the groups/artists that have created opportunities for their present idols.

">

This is a wonderful album and I highly recommend it! It is a perfect conclusion to a stressful day. Intelligently written melodies that are not obtrusive, whether sitting alone, legs outstretched, coffee cup in hand in the living room or while conversing with friends, this is an album that will get one’s attention with each melody for while listening to it, one finds himself tapping his fingers along with each song. :o)

LEGACY: A rare and indescribable discovery in So You Think You Can Dance

">Ever since the beginning of the present season of So You Think You Can Dance, LEGACY caught the attention of the judges and amazed every single soul that witnessed his performances.

It wasn't however until the actual competition started that Legacy blew everyone away. Contrary to the worry of the judges that he might just be a hip-hop dancer, Legacy proved that he could way more than hip-hop dancing.

I cannot describe in words what an amazing dancer Legacy is. Hence, I will just share this video. Remember, you are watching a hip-hop dancer. :o) Damn!!!

Danny Gokey: Still my most favorite Idol discovery ever!

Americal Idol has been on for so many years now. But no one has ever gotten me more addicted to it... until Danny Gokey.

The humble, impish, sexy and amazingly beautifully controlled voice never failed to wow audiences and always communicated each song with so much emotion one cannot fail to see how much of himself he puts into each song.

A true artist for me and definitely knows how to connect with people. :o)

For those who don't know him that well, here's some info I pulled from Wiki.

Daniel Jay "Danny" Gokey (born April 24, 1980) is an American singer and church music director from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the third place finalist on the eighth season of American Idol. After his placing on the show, Gokey signed to 19 Recordings and RCA Records Nashville as the beginning of a career in country music, releasing the single "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me." His debut album, My Best Days, was released in March 2010.

Early life
Gokey started singing with his family in church, but stated he would rather record mainstream music than perform solely contemporary Christian music. He has been the worship director at his church in Milwaukee, Faith Builders International Ministries, for several years. He is the fifth of six children. He has a brother, Charles, and four sisters. He has acknowledged the influence of Jeffrey and Robin Pruitt, the pastors of the church he works at and called his faith the "key to who I am."

On July 9, 2008, four weeks before he auditioned for American Idol, Gokey's wife underwent routine surgery for congenital heart disease. It was her third surgery, but she died from complications. The couple had been together for 12 years, and Gokey credited her for his success. Sophia was a fan of American Idol and encouraged Gokey to be a contestant, and Danny started a foundation in her name with some of her family members who are also musicians. The foundation includes a program to provide donated musical instruments to students.

Overview
Gokey rose to national fame with his participation in the eighth season of American Idol. On August 8, 2008, he auditioned in Kansas City, Missouri, along with his friend Jamar Rogers, who is also from Milwaukee. Both made it through to Hollywood, but Rogers was eliminated from the competition prior to the semifinals. Gokey's American Idol audition occurred only four weeks after his wife's death in July 2008.

Gokey, along with runner-up Adam Lambert, were judge favorites throughout the season, consistently earning high praise from all four judges. Approximately a month before the finale judge Simon Cowell said that he expected Gokey would make the finale, going head to head with Lambert,[citation needed] but Kris Allen went on to win the season.

During Rock Week (Top 4 week), Gokey's take on Aerosmith's "Dream On" was panned due to the extended scream with which he finished the song. Gokey was eliminated during Top 3 week, after his performance of Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful."
During the season 8 finale on May 20, 2009, Gokey performed a duet with R&B superstar Lionel Richie. The performance opened with Gokey singing a true-to-the-original solo of Richie's "Hello," which season 7 winner David Cook also covered during his season as a rock power ballad, and then Richie joined Gokey for a duet of his hits "Just Go" and "All Night Long".

Post-Idol career
Gokey was nominated in his state of Wisconsin for a WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) Award for Best Christian/Gospel Artist of the Year.

As of September 2009, Danny Gokey has finished his tour with the other idols on the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2009, and he is also working on his foundation, Sophia's Heart, which was set up to help disadvantaged children.

Gokey, known for his many pairs of eyeglasses that he often wore on the show, has stated he may start an eyewear line to help raise funds for his foundation.

On September 1, 2009, Gokey signed with 19 Recordings/RCA Nashville to record a country music album. The first single was originally to be "It's Only," written by Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, but on November 19, it was announced that this single would be withdrawn and replaced with "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me." American Idol 2010: My Early Prediction: LEE DEWYZE

">After witnessing the last American Idol performance, I have to say that one finalist truly did stand out for me. LEE DEWYZE, definitely someone to watch out for. He is not the best singer in the contest. But he has the looks, height, voice and most of all... crazy strong appeal.

Here for me is a perfect package that is better than a David Cook or Kris Allen. Straight, rough, slightly angelic but has the sex appeal going on.

For now at least, I think he is the American Idol for 2010.

Tattooed On My Mind

Since I was young I've always been obsessed with the art of tattoo. It is a different medium of art and is very personal. A statement and says so much about one's character.

It took me 6 years to find the right design, character and symbol that communicates who I truly am. Others see the symbols as decor, or "astig" symbols as they term it. But for me, it communicates the characteristics that we have that people only see or feel when they make the effort to really know you.

And so, as soon as I found the right artist, I jumped at the opportunity in an instant.

Butch Bautista, celebrity tattoo artist and one of the most dedicated tattoo artists I have ever met. A real artist with a heart and understands each client's personality. I will never forget witnessing him turning down clients who he feel are not ready or if the design does not suit the client.

Around two months of planning with Butch, he suddenly gives me a call and says he knows exactly what to do on my arm. And voila! As soon as I saw the design, I said YES! YES! YES!

9 straight hours! That's how long the session took. All in one sitting, Butch worked on my tattoo with ease. And after just one session, I had the best tattoo in the world!!! Yeah! No re-touch, no cover up! A perfect sketch in one session! Unbelieveable!

Definitely one of the country's finest, Butch Bautista for me is one of the world's best tattoo artists!

And yes! I am very very happy with my tattoo! As a matter of fact, I don't think I can ever give a price for the artwork Butch has placed on my arm. :o)

If you're interested to have a tattoo done by someone who knows the art, I highly recommend Butch. Clean, quick, detailed, and most of all, kick ass designs!!!

Fineline Tattoo is located at the Basement II, Bldg. A of SM City Taytay or visit http://www.butchbautista.com/

CD Review: JAY R Sings OPM Love Classics

The first time this CD was mentioned to me, I have to admit that I was not interested at all. Nor did I even think of writing a review of it. Yes, Jay R was one of those whose career rose at breakneck speed crowned with a huge hit so popular it could be heard performed in bars and played in every public utility vehicle. “Bakit Pa Ba?” was a jukebox hit and Jay R became a household name. Unfortunately, due to wrong career moves and terrible magazine exposures, his career plummeted just as quick. And then there was silence.

In the world of entertainment, artists come and go and an artists’ decision of signing up with the right company or agency truly matters in the longevity of one’s career. Jay R must be blessed for he is with if not the best, one of the best record companies in the country. Armed with an amazing team of executives, decision makers and music geniuses, Universal Records not only produces quality records, but also crafts careers with impeccable timing and imaging. The result; A whole new package and amazing album that showcases Jay R in his strongest suit.

OPM Love Classics as mentioned by Jay R in the introduction has been his lifelong goal. A musical journey as he says, not only speaks well of Jay R’s musicality, but of how much he has matured as a musician as well.

At first hearing, one feels as though Jay R simply hums through each song as though being self indulgent and not minding his audience. But once one listens carefully, to how each song is brought to life, one will see and feel that the versions are done in such an elegant manner that the singer does not try to catch your attention with vocal calisthenics but instead conveys the emotions written underneath each song. Jay R performs each song in a very humble way there is no hint of wanting to show off. But one can hear he has a voice that has grown warmer and deeper. It’s as if he has simply surrendered to the music, closed his eyes and sang. Simple, honest and true.

As much as I would like to go per song on this album, there is absolutely no way as the crafting of the album was done so well it is as though you are listening to a musical love story. Even the sequence of songs tells a story of young man wishing for his greatest love to come in “Himala”. Finding her and declaring their loyalty in “Ako’y Sa ‘Yo…”, the joy of discovering love’s true meaning in “Ikaw Lamang”, and pain of separation in “Paalam Na”, the longing for reunion in “Muli” – impeccably sung with “Soul Siren” Nina. As a whole, this is the first time I have heard Jay R sing with such simplicity and elegance. And wow, what a beautiful voice and ease, moving from one note to the other with such smooth lines.

The love story continue to unfold and each track captures me by surprise. Not because each song is so well sung but how amazing the entire team has put together an album so well produced. Ito Rapadas must have a special spot for this album as this for me is one of the best produced albums I have listened to in years. Elegant arrangements by Bobby Velasco! Tracks well orchestrated and arranged not a single song sounds out of place. Each arrangement decked with just the right amount of instrumentation and embellishments at the right spots. I think the mistake other producers make is that they tend to do so much in a song, the singer and other instruments drown and we are bombarded with a version so loud the musicality suffers. But in this album, every song is crafted carefully, making sure each line, stanza and segment delivers just the right amount of ingredient to the entire recipe. Hence, a perfect blend of musical flavors.

My praises as well to the creative team, as in unison with the music team, the album cover, design, photography and styling all sit so well with the concept of the entire album. From the photography of Doc Marlon Pecjo, cover design by Jay Lumboy, simple and elegant styling and make-up by Luis Espiritu, Barbie Chan and Nelson Cruz – they have created what is for me, a real OPM album with class, humility and warmth of a real Filipino singer. Not wanting to look foreign, but just the simple great singing and well bred Filipinos that we are. Thank God for once here is an album that is not trying to look and sound foreign. A very difficult task, but given the right team, very possible. The result, an album that is 100% OPM but of international quality.

How wonderful to listen to an album that is so well produced. I cannot remember how long it has been since I have listened to an OPM album wherein I listened to each song from start to finish, and wanting to hear more - not only because of Jay R’s impeccable delivery but also because of the great arrangements and musicality.

This is an album that I will definitely keep in my playlist for a very very long time. For the versions in this album I know, I can still play even 10 years from now.

Pilipinas Got Talent's Jovit Baldivino: WORLD CLASS

This blog is going to be short and sweet.

Once in a while, we witness miracles and these experiences will stay in our minds and hearts forever.

Such is the very humble audition of JOVIT BALDIVINO on Pilipinas Got Talent aired Feb. 28, 2010.

Of humble beginnings, this young man possesses one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard in my life. Without any professional training, Jovit sang with ease, elegance and absolute control. Moreover, he sang from the heart. Leaving me staring at the screen, mouth open, tears in my eyes...

This will remain in my mind forever. How beautiful to see someone of extraordinary gifts not even know the magic he makes when he begins to sing. And I am very honored to have witnessed it.

And he is right. He did show what a true Filipino really is. And I am with him, irregardless if he wins or not. He will always be one of my most favorite artists.
